By PIO Tyler Jones
October 15, 2025

It is with our deepest sympathies that we notify you that Past Fire Chief William "Bill" Watkins Jr. has answered his last alarm on October 14, 2025.

Bill joined Rescue Fire Company on September 24, 1987. Prior to becoming an Active Member, Bill pursued one of his greatest passions — providing and expanding the foundation of pre-hospital emergency medical care (EMS) to the citizens he served, as well as to all of Dorchester County. During this time, he served as both Lieutenant and Captain within the Ambulance Corps of Rescue Fire Company.

As he progressed to becoming an Active Member within the department, Bill held numerous positions within both the corporate and operational sides of the organization, ultimately serving as Fire Chief in 2002.

Bill not only provided unwavering dedication to Rescue Fire Company but also was a pioneer in the development of a unified Emergency Medical Services Department serving Dorchester County and its citizens. As these departments evolved over time, he ultimately served as Chief of the City of Cambridge EMS.

Those who had the privilege of serving alongside Bill remember a man whose passion for the service was matched only by his compassion for others. He served with unwavering dedication, pride, and respect—not only for the citizens of Cambridge, but for every individual who shared the duty of service. Bill led with both strength and heart, always placing the well-being of his members and community above his own. To his colleagues, he was a mentor and a brother; to his family, a devoted husband and father; and to all who knew him, a steadfast example of integrity, kindness, and commitment. His legacy of leadership and passion continues to guide the Rescue Fire Company and inspire future generations of firefighters.

A Fireman's Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, November 1st, 2025, at the Public Safety Building, 8 Washington Street, Cambridge, MD.
•Visitation: 1200 hours to 1300 hours
•Memorial Service: Begins at 1300 hours
